Lassithi Perfecture

The prefecture of Lasithi occupies the eastern department of the island and is divided in 8 Municipalities: Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra, Sitia, Neapoli, Lasithi Plateau, Makri Gialos, Lefkis and Itanou.

Three seas embrace it: the Cretan from north, the Libyan from south, and Carpathian from the east while from the west the mountain range of Dikti, dominates imposingly, stretching its overgrown slopes up to low in the plains of Mirampello and Ierapetra in a graphic opposition.

The morphology of ground in all the extent of prefecture, with the permanently alternate in intense opposition’s landscape, with its incomparable natural beauties, impresses from the first moment the visitor. The same oppositions present also its coasts. The climate soft and sweet, clearly Mediterranean, without abrupt seasonal precessions, is considered from the most healthiest and most pleasant at all the duration of the year. Green revels literally in plains and mountainsides due to the immense olive trees and the wild bushy vegetation.

The favourable climatic conditions ensure to the prefecture self-sufficiency in agricultural veterinarian products and horticultural, chosen, at common consent in quality and flavour. From certain regions (Ierapetra, Sitia, Sisi, Mirampello etc.) there is a systematic export precocious horticultural, not only to Greece but also in the abroad. Other exported products are the olive oil, the almonds, carobs and mainly the chosen raisins and the wine that is produced mainly at the province of Sitia.

The eastern department of the island has a rich intellectual delivery that is worthy continued from generation to generation until our days.
No other prefecture of Crete presents so much peculiarity as the Lasithi prefecture. Basic factor of this peculiarity is the combination of natural beauties with historical and archaeological interests.
Regions as Vai, Kato Zakros and Lasithi Plateaux are unique in Greece.

From archaeological opinion, the prefecture is studded with ruins of ancient cities, settlements and buildings, as the palace of Kato Zakros, the state of Gournion, Latous, Vasilikis etc.
But from historical opinion the Lasithi prefecture presents also big interest. Not only because it had been the shelter of Etekriton and also because Itanos played an important role in the history of Hellenistic years. It is also had been the theatre of bloody conflicts on Ottoman domination.

The visitor of prefecture can comfortably be moved with base any town of the prefecture and tour comfortably in the around region. Naturally the capital of prefecture Lasithi, the graphic Agios Nikolaos, constitutes the centre of many starting lines for routes ways with the local buses. The visitor that will have more time in his disposal and would want to know well the prefecture will move to various directions, with base Agios Nikolaos, Neapoli, Ierapetra, Sitia, Vai and Kato Zakros.
